The Retreat

A Gem in the Desert

The natural surroundings of the Evolving Sanctuaries Retreat Learning Center provide the ideal setting and environment for our work. Situated in the midst of the Gila National Forest in New Mexico, this region of rugged desert mountains, in one of the most remote areas in the southwest, contains an endless variety and abundance of nourishing impressions. The clear skies, deep canyons, enchanting woods and majestic sculpted cliffs offer you the seclusion, peace and presence that bring internal renewal. You can drink from clear springs, float in mossy pools beneath waterfalls, pick your way atop jagged rock formations, navigate the serpentine arroyos and canyons as they wind their way down from mountain top to river’s edge, or walk in the enchanting forest among trees hundreds of years old. And it’s all just a few minutes walk away.

Our center was founded on the notion that the problems we face individually and collectively can most effectively be worked with and solved in a communal setting. It is here that we work to disseminate and archive our teaching materials, and at the same time, explore and demonstrate the benefits of a holistic approach to lifestyle. We have devoted ourselves to creating and maintaining an intentional way of life that is more in accord with nature, promotes working together cooperatively, and offers maximum help and support for growth and development. We live off the grid, farm organically and every year we further our efforts towards self-sufficiency.

Organic Farm and Garden

Gardening connects people to their environment and health in a very real and practical way. The interdependence of the two becomes a never-ending source of learning and discovery that makes for more connectedness to life processes and sustenance. It brings out the nurturing qualities in people and increases their involvement in ecologically sound lifestyles. We run a certified organic farm and working on the land to grow and preserve our own food is a big part of what we do. Growing our own food creates a sensitivity that helps with better cooking and having a healthier diet. It fosters connection to nature, and balances against the madness of modern fast-paced lifestyle. More about the Garden

Off the Grid

One challenge with living in the wilderness is how do you supply the power you need in a way that is harmonious with the environment? Because the San Francisco River runs right though our property, we have been able to develop a hydroelectric plant that supplies our power needs. Over the years we have upgraded this system to allow us to have most of the electrical appliances and gadgets that are standard in our modern society. More about the hydro-electric power plant

Food

Our lifestyle at The Retreat has been consciously designed, integrating mindful practices into many ordinary activities. This is exemplified in our approach to food preparation and eating. Mealtimes express our appreciation for the miraculous chain of life and a recognition of our responsibility in it. The food is prepared with the greatest care, combining flavors and textures harmoniously, with many ingredients coming from our own garden. Through our conscious eating practices, we create a rich, awake and receptive atmosphere in which we nourish ourselves and each other.

Internships and Camps

Our internships and camps offer an immediate experience of how we approach our daily lives. When here, you are welcomed into our community. We invite you to share in these daily rhythms by participating in different projects on the land, such as preparing meals, working in the garden or with irrigation, power and construction projects. In this way you can experience for yourself how attentiveness to everything you do opens the door to a progressively deepening sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Facing the Truth

It is not the truth that we should be afraid of, which is why it has so often been said, “The truth will set you free.” Rather, what we should fear are the consequences that will invariably befall us as a result of ignoring, hiding from, or buffering ourselves against the truth. The best course is always to face it so we can be released from the chains and paralysis of untruth, and set about changing the things that need to be changed.

Contact Us

You can email us at [email protected]. Please understand that we are a modest endeavor staffed entirely by busy volunteers and largely funded by donations. Additionally, we live in a remote location with limited bandwidth. (Really, in this day and age, there still is such a thing as limited bandwidth where streaming data is a bad idea.) This means it may take us a while to respond to your query, but we will get back to you.   logo-nicer-2014-2.png
