Spiritual masters agree that attachment to things of the world and the overstimulation of the external senses constitute an irremediable barrier to deeper spiritual experience. The first necessity is to break free of the pull of the world. This freedom is called non-attachment or non-identification. The pull of the world results in looking for everything and all satisfaction in the material, outer realm. It’s all too easy to get caught in the vicious cycle of external stimulation, temporary gratification, not being deeply satisfied, then craving more stimulation – thus making real contact with one’s inner nature impossible.
